Presence and engagement in C-level networking: the power of the word “PRESENCE”
Why losing focus can damage relationships with “high-flyers” — and how to stay engaged
Why attention matters so much when communicating with top executives
Attention is scarce. Most people keep their phone on the table and, at the first notification, “drift off” into messengers or email. The problem is that when communicating with high-level individuals, this is perceived as disrespect. Losing engagement in the conversation can cost you your reputation.
Why losing focus in C-level networking is dangerous for your reputation
Executives and business owners quickly pick up on your tone and level of attention. For them, it’s obvious: if you can’t stay focused on a conversation with them now, you won’t be a reliable partner in the future. A fleeting glance at your phone or a distracted response creates the impression that the relationship is not a priority for you.
How to maintain focus and presence
I put my phone aside. The best way to avoid distractions is to remove the temptation. Even a face-down screen nearby is still a “leak” of attention.
Eye contact and active listening. I look at the person, nod, and ask clarifying questions. You need to show: “I’m truly in this conversation — here and now.”
A micro-pause instead of drifting into your own thoughts. If a random thought appears, I take a breath, pause briefly, and bring my attention back to the conversation.
Capture the details. I write down key words and ideas. This not only helps me remember, but also shows the other person that I value what they’re saying.
Body energy = conversation energy. My posture, gestures, and tone of voice should say: “I’m fully engaged.”
The main rule of networking with “high-flyers”
When you’re interacting with “high-flyers,” nothing else exists. There is only this person and this conversation. It is this presence that builds trust and sets you apart from the dozens of others who try to be liked but never truly learn how to be genuinely engaged.
