Introduction to OSINT
In business, it’s not only about who you know, but also what you know about the people you’re about to work with. Before a meeting, negotiation, or deal — it’s wise to learn more about the person or company you’re engaging with. Not out of paranoia, but to stay on equal footing, avoid surprises, and prepare for a meaningful, informed conversation.
This approach is called OSINT — Open Source Intelligence.

What is OSINT?

OSINT is a methodology for collecting and analyzing information from open sources. It’s not espionage, hacking, or a violation of privacy. It’s based only on publicly available data: websites, interviews, social media, databases, public registries — everything that’s already out there, but not always obvious unless you know where to look.

Why is it useful in business networking?

You gain not just facts, but context. What does your counterpart care about? What are they focused on? What decisions have they made recently? Who have they worked with? Where did they study? What topics do they comment on in their favorite social network? All of this helps you:

– ask thoughtful questions during a meeting
– avoid blind spots
– show respect and preparation
– build trust faster

What can you find?

– Press releases and company-related news
– Profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
– Publications, interviews, conference participation
– Mentions in court cases or public registries (e.g., arbitration, bankruptcies)
– Involvement in nonprofit projects and charitable activities
– Registration data of sole proprietors or legal entities, partnership connections

Where to search?

There are both simple and advanced ways. From Google and LinkedIn to specialized services that aggregate open data. Especially useful:

– Yahoo Finance (company search)
– CNN, Daily news (even Google Trends or Google News)
– Industry media
– Telegram, TGStat (search for mentions of a person in public discussions and Telegram channels)
Checklist: how to gather information about a person and a company before a conversation

1. Person profile
✔️ Find their LinkedIn profile — check career path, mutual connections, activity
✔️Review public social media (Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, X/Twitter) — interests, topics, communication style
✔️Search their name on Google or Chat GPT — any interviews, quotes, publications
✔️Search “First Name Last Name + event/conference” — have they participated in public events

2. Company
✔️Check the company website — industry, case studies, clients, latest releases
✔️Look it up on corporate aggregators — legal info, financials, connections to other entities
✔️ Search the company name on Google News — any recent news or triggers
✔️Search on Telegram via TGStat — mentions, cases, feedback

3. Shared connections and “warm intros”
✔️Any mutual connections on LinkedIn? Someone who can introduce you?
✔️ Check who they interact with on social media — this helps understand their network and influence circle
✔️See which communities, clusters, or associations they are part of

4. Industry context and triggers
✔️What trends or pain points exist in their industry right now?
✔️Any change triggers: mergers, new hires, search for vendors?
✔️What moves have competitors recently made that could impact them?
Better to know than to guess

OSINT helps you approach meetings and negotiations not blindly, but with an understanding of context, interests, and your counterpart’s pain points. It’s not about surveillance — it’s about respect, preparation, and strategy.
