What should a leader do when departments speak different languages

How a leader turns conflict between departments into an opportunity for growth and alignment

When the goals are the same, but product, engineering, and sales teams speak different languages

In IT companies this happens a lot: product managers dream of speed (after all, you have to “fail fast” ;), developers want quiet and focus, and salespeople promise clients the impossible.

The result is conflicts, mutual accusations, and endless chats where no one hears anyone.

When the goals are the same, but product, engineering, and sales teams speak different languages

Two cases of how a single phrase from a leader changes the course of a conflict between departments

One example: the company was rolling out a new API. The product managers were rushing to show a demo to investors, while the developers were asking for another week for testing. The CTO brought everyone into one room and said a simple phrase: “We don’t need a perfect release. We need a stable one.” After that, the team aligned on priorities and shipped the MVP on time — without blaming each other.

Another case: in a SaaS company, sales were selling custom features that didn’t exist in the product. Developers were angry, product managers were defensive. The VP of Product introduced a rule: every promise to a client had to be backed by a link to the roadmap. Within a month, the chaos was gone and communication became more transparent.

Mediator leaders: people who read between the lines and bring teams together

The mediator skill is key here. A leader who can translate one team’s goals into another team’s language turns chaos into coordinated action.

They don’t just put out fires — they teach people to hear the meaning behind the words.

Such leaders are rare. They’re the ones who retain talent, ship products on time, and don’t lose customers because of internal wars.
Do you have someone like this on your team?
